On Tuesday, 8th Sept. the students in G4.2 began their Inquiry into Measurement. They were given the question 'How could we find the Perimeter of the class'?. The began brainstorming different ways to measure the length of things and created charts that showed the difference between standard and non-standard units of measurement. They then looked at the various measuring tools available and set to work. They experimented with different items and found that the standard measuring tools were more accurate than the non-standard measuring tools. e.g hands and feet. Seeing that most of the students did not know what Perimeter meant, they began measuring the sides of the class, calculating the total lengths and made connections with shape. They spoke about the class being a rectangle shape because of the accurate data they collected and compared with others. Only 2 sides shared the same numbers or findings. They concluded by saying that 2 sides of the class were equal and the other 2 sides were also equal but had different measurements. They added both the unequal and equal sides together and asked the Q...Is this the total Perimeter of the class? This was a WOW moment!!!!They had shown they could make connections, transfer their ideas and applying there prior knowledge to real life situations. The students then decided to follow the same process and inquire into ' How could we find the Area of the class and what is the relationship between the two'? Well done G4.2!!!
