This week we have worked hard on being effective THINKERS, KNOWLEDGEABLE in what we know and INQUIRERS in what we want to further pursue. The students have been working collaboratively with their research buddies. They have been looking to develop a deeper understanding about how organizations around the world are assisting people in need. This Unit has allowed the students to practice their questioning skills as well as their research skills. The students have been developing their own questions to inquire into about their chosen organization and have been making connections with themselves and the Singapore Community. Well done everyone!!!!
What a great way to finish off the week! On Friday 28th August, the students took part in a school Fun Run. The AIM for the afternoon was to complete as many laps of the school field as possible in the 30 minute time period. The students could walk or run. Every time they passed the start/finish line they received a tally mark on their score card. Each of the score cards were added to the students HOUSE.
We started our Recount Writing Unit off by looking at different types of writing and discussing some of the language and organizational features associated with them. We then listened to Ms Rehu share a Recount orally and decided which piece of writing shared similar language features. Following that, we looked at the different types of Recounts there are and began looking closely at the types of words that are used in each as well as the position of the writer and the point of view.
We looked at the language associated with an Orientation and made connections with the 5 W words + 1. The students decided that these W words are used to introduce the writing.
The students then looked closely at the events that were introduced in the different pieces of Recount Writing samples. They decided that these events had purposefully been placed in order to show how the progression of the events in time order. The students then noticed that transition words had been used to show the events progress over time. They also made a new list of ones that they were familiar with.
Learning Through Inquiry
On Wednesday 20th August, the Grade 4 students and Teachers took a trip to the High School Campus. They were on a journey of discovery where they wanted to learn more about how the Grade 12 Students have been working with various organizations around Singapore to assist people in need. The Grade 4 students spent the morning inquiring into what it means to be in need, ways to recognize a need, the needs in Singapore and organizations in Singapore that assist people in need. They showed new understandings through visual representations as well as through drama. The Grade 4 students also watched a play that was written by 2 Grade 10 students about the voice of an employer vs the voice of a domestic helper. This proved to be very powerful as the students reflected a lot about their own situations and the helpers that work for their families.
The last week has been busy with getting into the daily routines that we will be following this year. The students have spent a lot of time developing essential agreements for the class as well as for the Grade. We have also had discussions about how we learn best. This has helped us establish a classroom culture that caters for everyone.
How WE Learn Best...
The students in G4.2 created self portraits using half of a photograph to show their creativity and imagination. They looked closely at the features of the face, used symmetry and experimented with colors. They also made a frame with pictures and symbols that represent who they are and where they come from.
Ms Rehu comes from the land of the long white cloud, home of the hobbits and the World Champion Rugby Team "The All Blacks" . She enjoys rugby, dancing and traveling. She is excited to be part of the Grade 4 team and the ISS Community.
