Grade 4.2 spent the afternoon teaching G4.3 about how to convert improper fractions to mixed fractions and vice versa. The students in G4.2 had to think about strategies and visuals to use when teaching so that it would support their explanations. They also had to create ways in which they could check if their G4.3 buddy understood what was being taught. They were all marvelous mathematicians!!!
Mr Hugh came into our class this morning and showed us how we could use a FOCUS TOOL called ALoU in our Unit work. He showed us how it worked and spoke about the advantages and limitations of various situations. He also made connections with Unit vocabulary we are inquiring into; like beliefs and values. Thanks Mr Hugh for an interesting session!
Students in G4.2 have been demonstrating how to be effective communicators. They have been working collaboratively on creating a games area for wet days during the lunch hour. They have had to organize multiple things such as communicating with other teachers, working out systems, preparing schedules and creating responsible strategy posters for students to refer to.
Grade 4 spent the afternoon inquiring into how forces are applied to various sports. They looked at which forces are connected to various sporting actions and also which of Newton's laws each force relates to.
Last week we spent some time looking at what makes a successful team and how to be effective collaborators. We looked at how designated roles can sometimes hinder our learning as we only focus on what our own responsibilities are and not those of the groups. We looked at how we can effectively check in with other group members and ensure we are all working towards our goals. We also looked at what helps and hinders successful group work and created new essential agreements for the class.
The students have been very busy inquiring into what is a force? They have identified types of forces and the relationships with motion and velocity. They have been experimenting with different objects and materials and seeing how their predictions match their findings and/or results.
The total phase of this solar eclipse was not visible in Singapore, but the students had the opportunity to observe a partial solar eclipse. The Moon covered only a small portion of the Sun. The students used glasses to see the sun and moon, as well as created pin hole cameras in which they used to see round spots of light. These were images of the sun!
